One of the goals of the NSF-funded ROOT & SHOOT Research Coordination Network (RCN) project is to work towards a culture where all are included, welcomed, and safe in our professional spaces, including conferences. Over the past three years, through the efforts of the Inclusive Conference Working Group, the RCN has focused considerable attention on making our conferences safer and more welcoming spaces.

One of the recommendations of the Inclusive Conference Working Group was to provide opt-in training for conference attendees so they are better prepared to respond to problematic behaviors that they might observe. Over the past two years, the RCN has sponsored free 3-hour bystander intervention workshops and 1-hour advanced practice session, organized and led by the ADVANCEGeo Partnership

We are offering an additional 3-hour full trainings and 1.5-hour advanced intervention scenario practice sessions for those who have already completed the longer training session on:

  • Full training (3-hours): Tuesday, May 13 from noon-3pm EDT (9am-noon PDT)
  • Practice session (1.5-hours): Friday, May 30 from 1-2:30pm EDT (10-11:30am PDT)
  • Full training (3-hours): Monday, June 16 from 2-5pm EDT (11am-2pm PDT)
  • Practice session (1.5-hours): Thursday, June 26 from 4-5:30pm EDT (1-2:30pm PDT)

Who should attend these trainings? We particularly would like to invite people who plan to attend a 2025 plant science conference hosted by an organization affiliated with the RCN: the International Congress on Molecular Plant Microbe Interactions (organized by IS-MPMI); Botany (organized by the Botanical Society of America, BSA, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, ASPT, and others); and Plant Biology (organized by the American Society of Plant Biologists, ASPB).

People who hold leadership positions affiliated with any of these organizations are particularly encouraged to apply, but no matter what career level you are at, you can learn from these trainings and be prepared to respond if a problem arises. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Each session has space for 100 participants, and we hope to allow all who are interested to attend. Please express your interest by signing up using the forms below.
