The ROOT & SHOOT Research Coordination Network (RCN) has been developing a free online training to help plant scientists be more effective mentors, emphasizing how social identity impacts the mentoring relationship.
The See-Me Mentoring (Social Identity Matters In Mentoring) training has been developed by a cross-Society group of plant scientists at all career stages with guidance and feedback from mentoring experts at CIMER. The objective of developing this independent program is so that all plant biologists can engage with the training without charge.
Prior to our full launch, we are seeking a small group of volunteers to participate in the program and provide feedback on content and implementation. The program involves some independent pre-work followed by six weekly 90 minute small-group facilitated online meetings. Volunteers will be asked to complete short surveys after each session and to join in a group discussion and evaluation at the end of the training period.
The program will run for seven weeks (starting in September and running through early November) and cover topics including color-evasive practices in academia, engaging in impactful mentor-mentee conversations, shifting from a deficit-based to an asset-based mindset, intersectionality, and developing greater cultural awareness.
We anticipate that the volunteers who volunteer in the beta testing will be provided with a small honorarium for their effort, but this is not guaranteed do to ongoing funding uncertainties.We are looking for people who recognize the value of this project and that would be willing to participate even if the we are not able to provide the anticipated stipends.
