Molly Edwards is a plant biologist turned professional science communicator who goes by Science IRL on the internet. In 2022 she received her PhD from Harvard University, where her dissertation research in the Kramer Lab focused on the weird and wonderful 3D petals of columbine flowers. Upon graduating, she founded Science IRL Productions, LLC, and now works full-time bringing scientists’ stories to life on screen. Science IRL reaches over 60,000 followers, has amassed millions of views, and is included in educational curricula across the globe. Other fun projects include writing 10 episodes of Crash Course Botany, producing laboratory methodology videos for LabXchange, and most recently, figuring out how to use Science IRL’s platform to advocate for STEM research as it gets systematically dismantled in the US.

Join us for an interactive workshop to learn how to make your own science communication videos!

This workshop will draw on Molly’s 10+ years of experience producing science video content to empower us to use scicomm as a tool for science advocacy. We’ll discuss best practices for short-form video production, explore different formats and approaches, and workshop your own ideas for videos. You’ll come away with actionable steps for producing your own video that stands up for science, and we plan to stay in touch after the workshop ends to help each other amplify our videos when they come out.

We ask that you come prepared with an idea for a video that fits into one of these broad categories. We don’t mean these to pigeonhole you, we just want to have a sense of what people are interested in and how to organize breakout rooms — we encourage you to be as creative as possible and will be exploring lots of different formats and ways to create! And we will be workshopping the idea in small groups so it just needs to be at the vague concept stage right now, no need to craft a script or anything like that.
